Chapter Five

Isabella woke feeling gloriously rested and glowingly alive. Who knew sex could make a person feel this good? Little wonder many of her friends had gone from one man to another, tongues hanging out of their heads with lust.

She knew subconsciously Max wasn’t beside her, and she rolled over and cuddled his pillow, before breathing in his faint masculine scent. She could only imagine his demanding and strict routine. He’d always been too hard on himself, both physically and mentally. But he’d also always risen above the ranks and been the standout in whatever he chose to do.

She heard his voice, and realized he was on the phone as brief snatches of conversation filtered her way.

“Thanks Felicia. Most specifically I want to speak with the pit bosses and floor persons. But there’s nothing that can’t wait for a few more days…”

She sat up, warmth spreading through her on realizing just how much sacrifice he’d be making to accommodate their week long affair. He walked past the partly opened bedroom door, and when he glanced inside and saw her awake, he cut short the conversation. “I have to go, but keep me updated.”

She tilted her head to the side, her earlier glow fading even on seeing him in his fitted navy suit and crisp white dress shirt. Damn, if he wasn’t so built, and his face not stamped with such Jericho arrogance, he’d be beautiful. “Everything okay?” she asked.

He nodded. “Yes, all good.” His smile didn’t quite make it to his eyes. “Have you been awake long?”

Worried his casino would slump while he was taking care of her in the bedroom?

“No. I just woke up now.” She glanced at the clock and arched a brow. “Almost midday and I haven’t even got the excuse of drinking too much the night before.”

He stepped toward her and fingered a piece of her hair that had somehow remained in its topknot. “No, but you have the excuse of never having sex before. You needed sleep to recuperate.”

She nodded. “Sounds logical.”

He tucked her piece of hair behind her ear. “Mm. Not that I’m thinking too logically right now.” His hand dropped to cup her breast, weighing it in his palm while his thumb brushed back and forth across her nipple. It instantly sprang to life, and her eyes fluttered closed as she savored the tingling heat he generated. When cold air then greeted her skin, she opened her eyes with a bewildered frown.

“Don’t look at me like that, Bella,” he drawled, “or I might be tempted to forget you were a virgin last night and fuck you all over again.”

She gulped. A part of her demanded he do just that, while another part of her registered her tender flesh.

“So what are our plans for today?” she asked, her stare trailing boldly down his body to rest on the noticeable bulge in his pants.

He grinned. “First we make use of the ground floor restaurant and order lunch, and then we buy you a Halloween costume.”

It was that time of the year already? Damn.
